Photo Challenge: Week 3

Looking at all the topics for Week 3 of the Photo Challenge, it occurred to me that light was a prominent theme. Essentially, photography is all about light, however this week’s photos required me to really think about lighting and plan around it. Some of the things I had to consider were finding a safe place for night photography where I can take a long exposure image, times of the day for backlit photo's, not to mention creating Bokeh.

On top of that I had to look for eyes. Obviously I started with myself, but would that be enough? Do I have the guts to approach a stranger and take a close up photograph of them? Should I go to the zoo and capture the sad look in the elephant's gaze? These were some of the questions I asked myself. 

The technology part was made easier by all the gadgets lying around the house, I guess those are the benefits of having an IT guy as a partner ;-).

Then the colour orange. All the fast food logo’s start popping out. I also noticed that many of the dudes who hand out flyers at intersections are dressed in orange. Weird. 

To help me prepare for this week’s challenge,I read through Anne McKinnell’s  “8 types of natural light that will add drama to your photography”, a free ebook that's available on her website. Anne McKinnell decided to spend a year on the road in order to explore North America through photography. She documented the experience, including how much she spent on fuel and produced many amazingly beautiful images.  How cool is that!

Interconnected

I did this painting probably 2 years ago and until now, have not dwelt upon any conscious or subconscious meaning and significance that might have motivated me to do it. 

Energy: a topic that has occupied my mind (computer and workspace) for a large part of this year, has made me think about life and existence. Energy is all around us, we carry it within us, and when we run low, we take some form of it within us. We are all connected. The energy of the people we surround ourselves with have an effect on us. The energy we carry around affects everything around us. 

What I've learnt so far is that the story of energy can be complex yet at the same time, very simple. 

Black and Valentine Tree

I took a picture of this tree which stood just outside the Goethe Institute in Parktown during the cold Winter months. Getting back home, I was struck by the intricate texture of the bark. 

I couldn't wait to try out the acrylic texture paste . 

It's interesting how some things that we may take for granted can provide inspiration.

Kraft Series Exhibition by Ubermorgen.com

On Tuesday this week, the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg hosted a late morning (early lunch) hour long Walkabout exhibition presented by artist Hans Bernhard from the art duo Ubermorgen.com.

The exhibition titled “Kraft- Let’s Go!”, a part of the Ubermorgen.com’s “Kraft Series" featured themes on energy sources, fracking in the Karoo, Microexpressions, astronomy and gif-animation.

The exhibition also included reports by Shell Exploration Company B.V. such as the Environmental Management report of the South Western Karoo Basin Gas Exploration Application. One could spend time pouring over the material to understand the findings and the conclusion that was drawn up from the research done.  

Summing up the exhibition in the words of Hans Bernhard "But the Karoo is not what it used to be, it has already been fucked up over and over over the last centuries, it is dead by now. But there is gas for 30 years! So let's use it to boost South Africas economy for a while, it can really not get any worse! The devil-may-care, but we don't. Stop being stupid & Let's go!".
